Good mood food: TOMATO

GOOD BY NATURE

EVERYBODY'S FAVOURITE

Few vegetables are as well-known and as loved by Poles as the tomato. The characteristic taste and smell, full of divine umami, makes us eat tomato sauces, soups and salads with gusto, or simply as an addition to our sandwiches. Due to its origin (South America), in the warm months it grows with unbridled appetite, quickly and fiercely, in order to make it before the first frosts, which are fatal to it. Rubbed leaves and stems smell like nothing else and are associated with the coming summer, and delicate hairs protecting them against impatient intruders.

THE EXCEPTIONAL

WEALTH OF VARITIES

Their diversity is stunning, both in terms of shape, colours and shades. They are yellow and chocolate-hued, oblong and round, large like those called buffalo hearts, and tiny cocktail ones. The taste is as different as the appearance, but the best taste is always the same: when ripening on hot summer days. In autumn and winter, they are a nice reminder of these carefree days, enclosed in jars and cans.

A VALUABLE TREASURE

HIDDEN UNDER THE SKIN

Tomatoes not only taste wonderful, but also contain an extraordinary ingredient - lycopene. It is what gives tomatoes their red colour. It is twice as powerful an antioxidant as beta-carotene. Numerous studies show that lycopene is a serious player in the anticancer arena. If that wasn't enough, tomatoes are one of the best sources of potassium. Thanks to this, their consumption has an excellent effect on blood pressure regulation and, consequently, reduces the risk of, for example, stroke.

So, let's enjoy fresh tomatoes while they're available. After the first frosts, we will only have soups and sauces from jars. They will have to replace fresh tomatoes for many months before we can watch them ripen on the bushes again.
