Good mood recipe: MAKE SOME MESS

ETON MESS

A REALLY 'MESSY' DESSERT

Are you looking for the best recipe to celebrate the end of the strawberry season? In our opinion, there is no better option than preparing the Eton mess dessert. What is that? It's a simple mixture of strawberries, cream and crumbled meringue. It tastes best when prepared with the youngest members of the family, with a bit of holiday relaxation! It is worth turning a blind eye to such trifles as crumbs of meringue and dollops of whipped cream on the kitchen counter. Remember that mess is part of the recipe, and a certain nonchalance and a lot of laughter guarantee exceptional taste!

UNCERTAIN ORIGIN

EXCEPTIONAL TASTE

The first mention of Eton mess dates back to 1893 and was recorded by historian Arthur Beavan, who claimed that this dessert was served to Queen Victoria. If the legends are to be believed, Eton mess was developed during a cricket match played between Harrow and Eton College (where its name comes from). However, it is not known whether the author of the recipe was a clever confectioner or maybe... a dog? According to one legend, the dessert was created by accident, when a Labrador dog knocked over a basket with Pavlova dessert. Worse yet, there are also versions where the dog supposedly sat on it! Whatever the case, the hungry students did not mind that the sweets were crushed and were happy to eat such a messy dessert anyway.

We will probably never know what the truth is, but one thing is certain - everyone in Great Britain probably knows Eton Mess. The Good Mood Academy by CUCA invites you to try to create this English specialty in your kitchen!

GOOD MOOD RECIPE

ETON MESS: THE POWER OF SIMPLICITY

ACCESSORIES: your favourite boards, knives, measuring jugs and spatulas from CUCA, CUCA's magic spoons, serving dishes and your favourite tool for making whipped cream

INGREDIENTS (for three servings):

  • half a kilo of washed strawberries without stalks,
  • 15 small or 10 larger meringues (you can also use one large baked meringue!),
  • 250 ml of well-chilled whipping cream,
  • optional - strawberry or pomegranate juice to pour over the dessert (to make it even more dramatic),
  • edible flowers to decorate the dessert (we use pansies).

PREPARATION:

  1. Cut the strawberries into quarters and halves using the kitchen knives of CUCA. You can eat some of them to see if they have enough sweetness and sun.
  2. Crumble the meringues! This is where the real mess begins!
  3. Whip the well-chilled cream until stiff. Be sure to get your fingers dirty, and maybe even your nose, while tasting it again and again.
  4. Prepare jars, glasses or CUCA cups, and then start filling them alternately with strawberries, whipped cream and meringues, making a wonderfully messy dessert.
  5. Finally, pour juice over it or decorate it with a flower or saved meringue.
  6. It tastes best on warm, sunny days - be sure to eat it right away! Don't worry about the mess in the kitchen, just enjoy the messy dessert straight from Eton!
